Wang Guangqian’s primary research areas are sediment science and river management. He conducted research on the basic theory of water and sediment two-phase flow, process simulation of valley water and sediment, and engineering application. He built the kinetic model for water and sediment two-phase flow, came up with the formula of sediment particle concentration distribution and velocity distribution, and pointed out different characteristics of sediment particle movement and clear water turbulent. He established kinetic model for valley sediment, achieved the couple of river course and valley process, and expanded the sediment research from river to valley. His research results have played a role in resolving sediment problems of the Yellow River and the Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River. He undertook the 973 Project of "Dam Burst Mechanism and Risk Control Theory under Complex Conditions" and the research results were applied to the removal of risks brought by dammed lake in the Wenchuan Earthquake. He has won three awards such as the first and second prizes of National Award for Science and Technology Progress. He has published more than 240 papers and five monographs.
